The last issue was No. 50, marking fifty weeks of news and updates published every Friday without missing a deadline for almost a year. While this newsletter can only be described as a labor of love because of the work involved and minimal return, I was a little disappointed to realize how limited the love may be. I didn't receive a single comment on the milestone. Maybe next year we should go to a bi-weekly or mopnthly format. Have to think about that one. Yup, it's a Pity Party and you're all invited! Feeeeel the guilt. Feeeeeeeeeel the guilt!

Tomorrow, Saturday April 21st, Hoffman Lodge will celebrate its 150th Anniversary with a rededication ceremony by our Grand Master and the Grand Line. We have been requesting delegations from every Lodge for this august event for almost a year now, and we look forward to seeing many of you there tomorrow. It's a milestone event for our District and Hoffman Lodge, and we join in congratulating them. The activities begin at 11:00 a.m.

Following the festivities at Hoffman Lodge tomorrow, Orange-Rockland Central Chapter, Order of DeMolay, will install its officers at 3:00 p.m. at Wallkill Lodge in Walden, NY. Now, most of you are aware of my policy of keeping this newsletter to Blue Lodge announcements only and its focus will remain there, but when you own the football, you get to bend the rules now and then. The Chapter has a new core of young men whose enthusiasm and and zeal have stirred even our most tired and jaded Advisors. Folks, with one exception, we've had the same core team of advisors from the beginning of this Chapter. Seven of these young men showed up at our Advisory Council meeting the other night, a non-meeting night for the youths, and asked if they could practice their ritual, met with a new candidate, and ended up Opening the Chapter and Obligating him. On an 'off' night. I'll be blunt, my Brothers. It's sad that out of 1800+ Masons in the District, only six give a damn about the next generation, and we're not going to be able to do it much longer, we're the same guys working at this for almost ten years now. How about some help?

Well, that's it for now. I hope to see many of you tomorrow at Hoffman and DeMolay. Have a great week!

Walk Around Rockland Lake
United Hospice of Rockland is one of the community outreach organizations supported by Athelstane Masonic Lodge. On April 22nd, Hospice will again sponsor a Walk Around Rockland Lake, an annual event in which the Brothers of Athelstane Lodge and their families participate every year. brothers and their families from around the District are encouraged to join the brothers of Athelstane Lodge this year. It is an easy 3 mile walk around the lake, which is flat and has some benches for those that would like to take a respite to admire the landscape, and wild life -- swans, mallards, geese and aquatic life. The whole three (3) mile walk will take approximately two hours, depending on your style of walking. There will be some light snacks and drinks, and of course, abundant fresh air, sunshine, and lots of smiles. The health benefits are only out-weighed by the friendship and good time, not to mention the good work we are doing for Hospice. Please e-mail Bro. Richie Schwartz and let him know how many people are in your group so that he can let Hospice know the number and sizes of t-shirts needed. Please contact Bro. Schwartz for more details.

Should Masonic Lodges Own Their Own Buildings?

Should Masonic Lodges Own Their Own Buildings?
By Robert E. Davies, Grand Secretary, Grand Lodge of Ontario
Speech given at Grand Secretary's Conference, February 2002

The task assigned to me today is to address the pros and cons of Masonic ownership of real estate, at both the craft and Grand Lodge level. In order to provoke the maximum dialog in the time assigned it is my intent to merely set the table for discussion by laying out a few bits and bites for you to pick up what you wish to expound upon.

Here we go! At the time of the formation of the Mother Grand Lodge, Masons gathered mainly in quarters located in taverns. Here they no doubt enjoyed reasonable accommodation at minimum expense. Masonry flourished and expanded rapidly. Why?

A century later Masons were concerned about their fellow man and began to erect Masonic homes and engaged in multi-faceted acts of charity. Masonry flourished even more. Why?

During the past century the emphasis seemed to shift to the erection of buildings on a grand scale where lodges could meet and their Grand Lodges could set up their administrative headquarters. Midway through the century, Masonry began its numerical decline. Why?

At the start of this current century we find many lodges struggling to fund ownership of their own building and even Grand Lodges are struggling to retain their own structures. Why?

What has gone wrong? Do we allow our buildings to fall into disrepair and hence exhibit a negative influence of the Fraternity in the community? Are our membership losses related to time devoted to the wrong concerns?
Do we still have time to teach and practice Freemasonry the way our forefathers did, or are we too busy trying to hang on to our expensive real estate?

Have we lost the social aspect of Freemasonry enjoyed so long ago when Masons met in taverns? Is it time to take a serious look at the ever escalating cost in time and dollars, to meet once or twice a month in our own buildings? Is it time to divest ourselves of what, in many cases, may be an albatross about the lodges' neck, in order to get on with the job of practicing Freemasonry in all its vicissitudes, cultivating harmony and extending our charitable endeavors?

Brethren, the table is set. Please pick up the bits and bites laid out for discussion!

HELP WANTED

Restoration Help Wanted
Cornerstone Lodge would like to announce to the District that the restoration of McGarrah's Stagecoach Tavern is underway. We are looking for volunteers to assist in the historic preservation of our building which houses the oldest surviving Masonic lodge room in New York State and the third oldest in the nation. Freemasons who donate two weekends of labor or a cash donation of the equivalent to the project will have their names permanently inscribed on a commemorative stone as contributors. The official dedication of our Museum and Historic site will be October 14, 2007 when the M:.W:. Neal I Bidnick, Grand Master of Masons, will perform the opening ceremonies. This will be a few days shy of the 190th Anniversary of the first Masonic meeting in the building. We expect many visitors from the local historic community to attend. Brothers, please mark this date on your calendars. There will be much food and celebration.
