Happy New Year! Welcome to the first issue of Orange-Rockland masons Online for the year 2007 and what year it's going to be. We've all had a chance to relax a bit but it's time to get back to the quarries and our labors in earnest. There are already some great programs planned in our District backed by some major endeavors planned by our Grand Lodge. Our beloved Fraternity stands poised for significant growth through meaningful activities that hearken back to our core principles and tenets. All we need to succeed is you!

Grand Lodge has sent some significant tools to our Lodges over the last few weeks. First, we received the new Master's Pocket Guide and Chaplain's Book. The Master's Guide contains everything that a Master needs at his fingertips to run his Lodge including detailed lists of the officers duties, Grand Lodge resources, tips on dispensations, suggested programs, and important checklists. Ask to see a copy, you're sure to be impressed. We also received the new Chaplain's Book which contains all of the prayers used during meetings and degrees, as well as collected invocations and benedictions that can be used at any occasion. Remember, there is NO reason for a ritual book to EVER be open during ANY Lodge meeting.

We also received the new membership program packages from Grand Lodge which include a stack of the new 'Who Are the Masons?' brochures, informational CDs, and additional copies of the folding wallet information cards for you to offer prospective candidates for Masonry. These all incorporate the Masonic Compact and new 'Encourage Your Friend to be Your Brother' promotional logo. If you require additional copies of these materials, please do not hesitate to contact Lodge Services.

The other key component to a successful membership effort is the Brother Bring a Friend Night program which is explained in detail in the new 24" Gauge Masonic Resource Guide. Please remember that this program is only successful when all of the steps are followed, including name collection, invitation letters to prospective Masons, and to the brothers of your Lodge, a well planned presentation and displays following the guidelines in the book, and proper follow-up. It is NOT a casual invitation to a few guys to come to the Lodge for tacos. If you have any questions on how to execute a successful Brother Bring a Friend Night, please contact the District Deputy Grand Master or the Grand Director of Ceremonies.

Finally, I would like to congratulate ORDMA on an awesome Holiday Party last weekend. There were fifty people in attendance including many families with kids who enjoyed the treasure hunt, cotton candy, and a special appearance by Ordma the Great. The rest of us enjoyed an awesome Italian buffet, tons of desserts, and a lot of laughs and good cheer. If you weren't there, you missed a great time, and I hope you will come out to support your District and District Association at the annual Dinner Dance in March.

Well, tat's it for now. We have a fairly quiet week ahead of us, but please don't forget the Masters and Wardens meeting and School of Instruction on Monday Night at Jerusalem Temple Lodge. There's also an Entered Apprentice Degree on Friday evening in Port Jervis and I know many Lodges have Entered Apprentices studying at this time; why not bring them by? I hope to see you and them there. See you next week!

Did You Know?

At least two ships have had masonic names. Two sailing ships of interest operated off the U.S. Eastern seaboard between 1737 and 1779. They were the "Freemason" and the "Master Mason".

The brigantine "Freemason" is recorded on voyage in late 1772 while in Shipwrecks North of Boston: Vol. 1: Salem Bay a note is made of a "... storm, killing ten (1773); The explosion at anchor in Marblehead of the privateer brigantine Freemason" in 1779.

In sailing, a brigantine is a vessel with two masts, at least one of which is square rigged. In modern parlance, a brigantine is a principally fore-and-aft rig with a square rigged foremast, as opposed to a brig which is square rigged on both masts. In the late 17th century, the Royal Navy used the term brigantine (often contracted to brig) to refer to small two-masted vessels designed to be rowed as well as to sail, rigged with square sails on both masts.

A daily newspaper comic strip, Get Fuzzy depicts a selfish, violent cat named Bucky, a child-like dog named Satchel and their bemused owner, Rob. From April 14 to 19, 2003 Bucky explained that he belonged to a Masonic Lodge, announcing that he would kill anyone who tried to stop him from attending, and noting that a lot of cats belonged to his Lodge: "They're orange." HELP WANTED

Restoration Help Wanted
Cornerstone Lodge would like to announce to the District that the restoration of McGarrah's Stagecoach Tavern is underway. We are looking for volunteers to assist in the historic preservation of our building which houses the oldest surviving Masonic lodge room in New York State and the third oldest in the nation. Freemasons who donate two weekends of labor or a cash donation of the equivalent to the project will have their names permanently inscribed on a commemorative stone as contributors. The official dedication of our Museum and Historic site will be October 14, 2007 when the M:.W:. Neal I Bidnick, Grand Master of Masons, will perform the opening ceremonies. This will be a few days shy of the 190th Anniversary of the first Masonic meeting in the building. We expect many visitors from the local historic community to attend. Brothers, please mark this date on your calendars. There will be much food and celebration.
