Wow, another busy but awesome week and it's still not over! Last Saturday saw two remarkable community service events in our District. In the morning, the Brothers of Warwick Lodge participated in ceremonies dedicating a new plaque honoring Revolutionary War soldiers. Not only was Warwick Lodge recognized for their significant contributions to this memorial, but a non-Masonic speaker spoke for over five minutes about the important role that Freemasons and Freemasonry played in the formation of our great country to a crowd of close to a hundred people. More details about this remarkable event can be found elsewhere in this issue.

After the memorial dedication, Helen and I headed to Middletown to get in a little shopping before attending the Spaghetti Dinner hosted by Hoffman Lodge as a benefit for the Goshen Science Olympiad team. The Brothers of Hoffman Lodge labored in the kitchens while fifty students served about 200 assembled guests. Let me tell you, these kids are already rocket scientists! The money raised will help support the program and travel of the team members to national competitions. Congratulations to Hoffman Lodge on making a real difference in these kids' lives!

On Tuesday, Athelstane Lodge conferred a moving and impressive Entered Apprentice Degree, their second in two weeks. The next evening saw seven Brothers Raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason in Wallkill Lodge, but not until they had demonstrated their proficiency superbly in open Lodge. That's two classes in a row who have done this at Wallkill Lodge now. This return of a rapidly disappearing tradition should be welcomed and I congratulate our new Brothers and their educational team, led by RW Dave Blasch, on their hard work. The Lodge did not let these new Brothers down either, delivering a truly outstanding degree. My hat's off to Athelstane and Wallkill Lodges for all the time and preparation that you put into these degrees. You have truly provided the Masonic Experience for these new Brothers that our Grand Master keeps talking about. Keep up the good work!

I know that preparations are also well under way for the Entered Apprentice Degree at Port Jervis Lodge this evening. The regularly scheduled rehearsals of this Lodge also guarantees impressive ritual and I encourage all who can attend to do so and support our Brothers. With regrets, I cannot as I will be bringing the DeMolays to Gloversville for their Division Conclave, but will return in time for our Masters and Wardens meeting and School of Instruction on Monday. This should be a great school, focusing on how to learn and teach ritual, followed by cards and holiday cheer. I encourage you to bring your officers and new Brothers, of any degree, to this informative and social evening.

We also have a Fellowcraft Degree at Hudson River Lodge next Wednesday, so it's another busy week. Why not take a night off from holiday shopping and visit one of these meetings and share some holiday cheer with your Brethren? We'd love to see you!

Warwick Masons Help Commemorate Revolutionary War Volunteers.

The Brothers of Warwick Lodge No. 544 F & AM recently took part in ceremonies unveiling a memorial plaque, honoring some 435 Warwick area residents who were part of the 4th Regiment of the Orange County Militia during the Revolutionary War. Recognizing the important role of the Masonic Brotherhood during the War, the brothers of Warwick Lodge used the proceeds of their annual Lobsterbake to provide the startup funds for the memorial.

The plaque was a project of the Warwick Historical Society, and one of the Society’s members, Bro. Gary Randall, was a key supporter of the project. Bro. Randall is also a descendent of one of the 435 Militia members. Working with Dr. Richard Hull of Columbia University, and Betty Hurd, of the Warwick Valley School District, they carried out important research that answered a centuries old mystery, what happened to the almost 1,000 Missing in Action after the battle of Fort Montgomery? Many were members of the 4th, and had headed west to the Warwick Area after the battle.

Taking part in the unveiling were the Master, W:. Luke Gordon, W:. Peter Goydich, W:. Phillip Herbst, W: William Howell, Jr., W:. Daniel Janes, Bro. Randall, Bro. Anthony Sartori, Bro. Jerry Sommer, and R:.W:. Joe Leo.

Did You Know?

When asked how he came to be a Mason, President McKinley explained:

"After the battle of Opequam, I went with the surgeon of our Ohio regiment to the field where there were about 5,000 Confederate prisoners under guard. Almost as soon as we passed the guard, I noticed the doctor shook hands with a number of Confederate prisoners. He also took from his pocket a roll of bills and distributed all he had among them. Boy-like, I looked on in wonderment; I didn't know what it all meant. On the way back to camp I asked him:

'Did you know these men or ever see them before?'
'No,' replied the doctor, 'I never saw them before.'
'But,' I persisted, 'You gave them a lot of money, all you had about you. Do you ever expect to get it back?'
'Well,' said the doctor, 'if they are able to pay me back, they will. But it makes no difference to me; they are brother Masons in trouble and I am only doing my duty.'
"I said to myself, 'If that is Masonry, I will take some of it myself.' "
